get me outta here.

A week in Honiara, Solomon Islands was approximately six and a half days too long. For all of the pleasant surprises Timor offered Ash, Honiara presented a dire and depressing scene that was quite confronting for all of the team. The devastating poverty, pollution and sense of hopelessness within communities was an abrupt reality check. The project site includes a dump community - people with nowhere to go, deemed illegal settlers and consequently having no rights. Already facing an impossible situation, these communities are also in the flood plain. It floods frequently. On days such as when they visited the community, it is hard to advocate for focusing on that which needs to be done to address climate change.

The Solomons also meant no telephone access, limited and outrageously expensive internet and a full on work week helping the national team achieve goals when they are so restricted by basic access to everything we take for granted in an office. Running electricity for instance. Of course, out of Honiara, there were actually quite beautiful areas. And decent Japanese restaurants, who knew. For the large part, unfortunately though, Honiara plays into all of the images that come to mind, demonstrated by car burning on the shore in the photo above. Consequently there are few photos to share from the Solomons (there may also have been an issue of forgetting to charge the camera battery...) but there are some more snaps from Timor that we will put up.

Suva, capital of Fiji is home for this week!

zumi in hanoi.

Life in Hanoi carries on, through storm, typhoon and phenomenally hot days. Fortunately with many friends passing through and in town, there have been many dinners and laughs had. Last week, a friend arrived in Hanoi for a quiet getaway from her hectic life in Phnom Penh, so we declared that a day of pampering was in order, massages, pedicures, brunch, shopping, a bottle of wine and a delicious dinner. Quite a treat!
Dinner also came with a delivery from amazon, my zumi. Much to Ash's amazement I have managed to get my hands on yet another camera, and yes a plastic one at that. The tiniest video camera I have seen, it packs a punch and gives some amazing retro results. It also beats the bananas out of all of the iPhone apps that supposedly let you snap similar style prints. Since Claude (SLR)* is travelling the Pacific, photographing beaches, sunsets and the like, it is only fair I have a fun little replacement. Right?
More to come from the Pacific, the boy is on the move again. Honiara next!

*I may also name my cameras. I am sure that the naming of inanimate objects ends here though.

where he be.

After a weekend stopover in Singapore and some round about overnight flights Ash arrived rather early in Timor-Leste.  Pleasantly surprised by the charm of Dili and delighted by the access to Sri Lankan and Thai food the first leg has not all been under duress. Although the army barracks (below), I mean hotel... at $100 a night lacks a little to be desired.

The proximity to the ocean makes for an entirely pleasant change from Hanoi. With the tide out and wading through thigh deep seaweed - the first dip in the ocean in quite some time was rather exciting. Probably for the best they did not start in Palau or the standards may have been set a touch higher. I left out the work photos (drains, degradation and the sort... leaving sunsets but over the mangroves!!!) althoughI have been assured they are working very hard and it is not all romantic strolls along the beach... with the boss!
